Earl McSherry Hyde,

Earl McSherry Mac Hyde, Jr., age 96, formerly of Bethesda, MD passed away Friday, November 6th at Orchard Village in Winchester, VA. Born on December 25, 1918 in Moorefield, WV, he was the son of the late Earl McSherry Hyde and Alice Sidney Cunningham Hyde. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ruth Penrose Keating Hyde of Winchester, VA, whom he married on October 17, 1953 in Frankfurt, Germany. He was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Cunningham Hyde and sister, Margaret Ann Seymour Hyde Williams. After graduating from Moorefield High School in 1936, Mr. Hyde received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Army after college, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater for four years. He also served in the Reserves until 1950. Mr. Hyde was an avid scholar and continued his education after the army. He received a Master of Arts degree from John Hopkins School of Advance International Relations, a diploma from the Institute Des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva, Switzerland, and completed coursework for a Ph. D in International Relations at American University in Washington, DC. He later became a published writer with emphasis on international intelligence and counterintelligence. Professionally, Mr. Hyde spent 30 years as an intelligence officer with the U.S. Foreign Service (CIA). He specialized in Eastern European and Asian developments, serving in Germany, South Korea, the Philippines, Japan, and Australia. Mr. Hyde was known as an exceptional diplomat, always attentive, soft spoken, interested, and kind. He carried those traits into retirement where friends and family held him in the highest regard. During retirement, Mr. Hyde was active in research, international travel, personal investments, and family genealogy. He also dedicated his time and talents to numerous organizations: the Cosmos Club, Society of the Cincinnati, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Revolution, Society of Colonial Wars, Diplomatic and Consular Retired Officers Club, Order of the Lafayette and National Intelligence Study Center. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:30 AM Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street, with Pastor Richard Cardot officiating. Interment will follow at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 11:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home.
