Arlene
Stump
Dec 11, 1942 — Aug 18, 2026
Moorefield, WV
Sally "Arlene" (Armentrout) Stump, age 83, of Moorefield, WV passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, West Virginia. Born on December 11, 1942, at the family home on South Fork Rd., she was the daughter of the late Kirk James (1915–1996) and Janie Margaret (Crites/Koontz) Armentrout (1915–1985). Arlene was very privileged to have another “mother,” Aunt Willye F. Shobe (1899–1992), whom she loved and appreciated very much.
Arlene was the proud wife of Johnnie William Stump Sr. (1941–2023) for 66 years. Johnnie passed to his heavenly home on July 11, 2023. Arlene was also preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Blake Kimble (1989–2006); a brother, James Kirk Armentrout (1939–2016) (Josephine); and a sister, Helen Marie Armentrout (1941–2023) (Riggleman/Sions/Lewis).
Arlene was a faithful member of Harpers Chapel Church of the Brethren, where her husband, Johnnie, served as pastor at the time of his passing. During their marriage, Johnnie and Arlene made their homes in Jenkins Hollow, WV, Bergton and Fulks Run, VA, and Moorefield, WV.
Johnnie and Arlene were the very proud parents of four children: Johnnie W. Stump Jr. (Michael Hallisey) of Kansas City, MO, Hiram Allen Stump (Kimberly) of Burlington, WV and Carol Marie Stump and Gloria Faye Helmick, both of Moorefield, WV. They were the proud grandparents of 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. They were also proud "grandparents" to Keaton East.
Throughout the years, Johnnie and Arlene opened their hearts and home to foster multiple children, teenagers, and adults. They were members of the Fresh Air Fund of New York City, hosting children from underserved communities in their home during the summer months.
Arlene leaves behind four sisters: Diana “Gay” Ketterman (John David) and Charlotte Ketterman (Roy) of Moorefield, Doris Stanley (Frank), and JoAnn Varner/Jarman (Kelly / Jim) of North Carolina; and two brothers: Stanley Armentrout (Rose) and Thomas Armentrout (Bonnie) of Moorefield.
During high school, Arlene was a member of the West Virginia Civil Air Patrol. She worked and retired from the Pilgrim's Pride fresh plant, where she served as an Emergency Medical Technician in the first aid office. Arlene also worked for VanMeter Ambulance of Grant County and Valley Medical Transport, dedicating 35 years as an EMT. Her last position was as a Foster Grandparent volunteer at Moorefield Elementary School, where she loved working with many of her "extended grandchildren." She wished to give special thanks to her nephew Wade Armentrout for giving her that special opportunity.
Arlene’s final words to her daughter Carol were, “She just went over the mountain, she did good.” Her children, family, friends, and extended loved ones will miss her dearly, and her front porch swing will now sit silent.
Arlene requested that her body be donated to the West Virginia University Human Gift Registry to support medical education and research. At this time, there are no plans for a memorial service.
