Obituary

Betty Branson Hefner of Moorefield, WV, passed peacefully into the presence of God on Thursday, November 5, 2026, with her daughters at her side. She was born on August 28, 1940, in Baker, WV and was the daughter of the late Glenn Washington Combs and Leona Carmen Funkhouser Combs. She was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, Tom Branson in 2000 and Wayne Hefner in 2012, as well as her brothers Charles Funkhouser and Alan Funkhouser.

Betty lived a life defined by devotion to her family, faith, and community. She was a long-time faithful member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren, where she served as a deacon, a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. Her spirit of service shone brightly through this as well as her more than 60 years of dedicated volunteer work with the Moorefield Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary where her selfless efforts left a lasting mark on her community. Additionally, she was a member of the Riverside CEO’s Club for over 40 years, where she served as their secretary, as well as a member of the Red Hat Society. She also volunteered at the Grant County Nursing Home for many years.

Betty was a lifelong caregiver who gave her love freely; she had a hug for everyone she met. She got so much joy from lifting others up and did so by offering a kind word, a listening ear, or remembering friends and family through her card ministry. Above all, she loved being a mother to her daughters, a grandmother to her grandchildren and a friend to the many wonderful people who crossed her path throughout her life.

After starting her career in Washington, D.C., at the National Bank of Washington, she returned home to Moorefield. While raising her family, she lent her talents to several local business, including Bishoff’s, RF Manufacturing, Hester Industries, Stewart, Barr & Thorne Dentistry. Most notably, she found her true calling as a nurse for Dr. M. H. Maxwell, working alongside him until his retirement in 1984. This role held a special place in her heart, as it allowed her to deeply care for and connect with the people in her community.

Betty is survived by her loving fiancé, Sonny Golliday; her devoted daughters, Sherry Vance (Cliff) and Tammy Damron (Scott); her cherished grandchildren, Emily Damron, Jesse Earle (Jerrica), Ryan Damron (Maddie) and Alexa Earle; as well as numerous extended family members including many dear nieces and nephews.

The family extends their deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate caregivers who lovingly cared for Betty, including Donna Sullivan, Linda Sites, Angela Gossard, Charlotte Mongold, Teresa Crites and Betty Brittanger. They also extend their appreciation to the Grant Memorial Hospice and all the wonderful staff who assisted in her care. A special thank you to Pastor Mike Funkhouser and his wife Ann for their loving ministry over the past several years.

A funeral service celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren, located at 115 Clay Street, with Pastors Russell & Lucy Webster and Mike Funkhouser officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation from 2:00 PM until the service begins. Interment will be private.

The family suggest memorials in her honor may be directed to the Moorefield Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, P O Box 853, Moorefield, WV 26836 or Hospice Promise Foundation, c/o Grant Memorial Hospice, 100 Hospital Drive, Suite #2, Petersburg, WV 26847.
