Buddy Lewis Webster, age 84 of Moorefield, WV, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2022, at Grant Memorial Hospital, in Petersburg, WV, following his admission there one day prior. Born on April 26, 1938, in Moorefield, WV, Buddy was the son of the late Vernon William Webster, Sr. and Myrtle Lee Shockey Webster. He was preceded in death by his second wife, JoAnne Haggerty Webster (d. 2011), to whom he was married for 28 years, and his first wife, Ada Katherine (“Ada Kay”) Bean (d. 2013), the mother of his three children, Carrie, Brent and Lisa.
Buddy graduated from Moorefield High School in 1956 and attended Potomac State College. Buddy is a Veteran of the United States Army (1962-1965). Following his military service, Buddy briefly resided and worked in Falls Church, Virginia, but returned to Moorefield, and for the next three decades was employed with the WV ABCA Enforcement Division, where he retired as Regional Manager in 2000, after 32 years of service.
Buddy enjoyed public service. He was appointed and served on the board of directors for the WV State Rail Authority, the E.A. Hawse Health Center, and E.A.C.H.S., Inc (Head Start). He also served many years on the Hardy County Planning Commission (past president) and two terms as the Zone II Governor of Upper WV District #19.
Buddy was also active in various clubs and organizations in Moorefield and in Mathias, where he resided for nearly 30 years before relocating to Moorefield to be closer to his immediate family. Over his lifespan, his memberships include Moorefield Church of the Brethren, American Legion Post 64, Hardy County Rod and Gun Club, Valley View Golf Association (charter member); Moorefield Lodge #29, AF & AM; 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemasonry; Beni Kedem Shrine Club; and the Mathias Ruritan Club, where he served as president for multiple terms and was twice recognized as the Mathias Club Ruritan of the Year.
Buddy will be remembered as a kind, easy going person who never met a stranger. Buddy loved sports and was a standout athlete at Moorefield High School. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing in his earlier adult years and later in life, he devoted his free time volunteering in his Mathias community, spending time at his Myrtle Beach time share with his wife, JoAnne and sometimes doing “nothing at all.” He spent many hours a day watching sports and the news. He loved the Los Angeles Dodgers, a passion he shared with his son, Brent, and remained loyal to the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins). And of course, he was a loyal WVU Mountaineer and Moorefield Yellow Jackets. He also enjoyed playing bridge and socializing with his many friends at the View, the senior living complex where he resided for several years prior to his death.
Left to cherish Buddy’s memory are his daughters, Judge Carrie Webster and Lisa Cole, and son, Brent Webster (Kimberly); his grandchildren, Aaron Cole, Justin Webster, Kyle Webster, and Katherine Skinner; his beloved siblings, Vernon Webster, Jr. (Irene) and Annabelle Barr; and numerous nieces and nephews, all whom he adored.
Buddy’s family would like to thank the medical staffs at the Veteran Administration and Grant Memorial Hospital, and a special thanks to Linda Sites and Rose Miller, his 24/7 caregivers during the month prior to his passing, and to Sunette Barr and Grant County Hospice, whose care and responsiveness allowed Buddy to pass peacefully.
A memorial service and celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren, with Pastors Russell and Lucy Webster officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Due to the current COVID-19 recommendations, wearing of masks and social distancing by individuals unvaccinated is recommended.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mathias Ruritan Club P.O. Box 84 Mathias, WV 26812, or the Vernon and Myrtle Webster Scholarship Fund, c/o Hardy County Board of Education, 510 Ashby Street, Moorefield, WV 26836.
