Charles ?Chuck? Lewis Silliman, Sr. age 77 of S. Main St, Moorefield, WV, died Monday, June 28, 2010, from cancer, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Born December 10, 1932 and raised in Newell, WV (Hancock Co.), he was the son of the late Lewis E. & Marie H. (Parson) Silliman. He was a graduate of Wells High School of Newell and graduated from Fairmont State (University) College in 1960. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a hospital administrator. He retired in 1980 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Surviving is his wife, Carmen Gamble, whom he married on August 30, 1958; a son, Charles ?Chad? L. Silliman, Jr., his wife Kristine and children; Tanner Erickson, Loegan Marie, Canyon Gamble, Tierney Leigh & Hauk Michael; and a daughter, Katherine S. Hefner, her husband Roger and son; Adam Hardy and great-granddaughter Aubrey Kristen; a grandson, Robert Mortimer Hardy preceded him in death,. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church with Pastor Katherine Jackson officiating. Interment will follow with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the U.S. Air Force and the Moorefield Veteran?s Honor Guard at the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 ? 4 & 6 ? 8 PM Wednesday at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St, Moorefield, WV. Condolences to the family may be left at Mr. Silliman?s obituary at www.fraleyfuneralhome.com . After his retirement from the US Air Force, Chuck managed the Moorefield Examiner. He served on the WV Board of Pharmacy for 9 years, served on the Board of Directors of Love Memorial Clinic and the Board of Directors of Grant Memorial Hospital and was asked by the Hardy County Commission to head up the recovery effort in the county following the flood of November 1985. He worked as a volunteer ?Director of Emergency Services? establishing the groundwork for what is now the Enhanced 911 Office of Emergency Management in Hardy County. He was a substitute teacher, having taught 3 full years, 1 each at Mathias, East Hardy High School and Petersburg High School. He was the Superintendent of the Moorefield Flood Levee for 6 years, was a member of the WV Disaster Recovery Board for 8 years and he established the ?Local Emergency Planning Committee? serving as the Chairman. He established the Community Emergency Response Team ?CERT? serving as a trainer and Coordinator. He was a faithful member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, an Elder, a Sunday School Teacher and Clerk of the Session. For more than 50 years he was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a Charter Member of the Hardy County Chamber of Commerce; a member of the John M. Golliday, Post #64 American Legion and Hardy County Voiture #1623 40 & 8. Chuck was a sitting member of the Moorefield Town Council and was Chairman of the Hardy County Democratic Committee for over 20 years.
