Danny William Sherman

Danny William Sherman, Master Sergeant USAF (retired), passed away on May 29, 2014 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, VA. Born in Baltimore, MD on September 7, 1944, Dan was the son of the late William Brook Jess Sherman and Georgiana Ruth (Barr) Sherman of Rig, WV. He graduated from Moorefield High School in West Virginia in June of 1962 and enlisted in the US Air Force in December 1963 completing eight weeks of basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonia TX. In August 1964, he then attended eight months of Flight Simulator Training School at Chanute AFB Illinois. Upon graduation, he was transferred to the 4017th Combat Crew Training Squadron in the Strategic Air Command at Castle AFB, California. He was an operator/maintenance technician on the four static and six mobile B-52 Flight Simulators. He spent temporary duty assignments at numerous northern Air Force bases on mobile simulators which were housed on two train cars. While on leave from Castle AFB in 1967 he married Barbara Lee Harrison at the Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, WV on July 17. From California they were stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB, SC, where he was a shift supervisor on the A-7D Flight Simulator. His last assignment in the Air Force was as Lead Technician involved in the procurement and testing of the A-10 Flight Simulator at the Tactical Air Warfare Center at Eglin AFB, FL. Dan's military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal (with one device), the Distinguished Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (with two devices), the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal (with five devices), the National Defense Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon (with 4 devices), the NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon (with one device), and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon/Rifle. Following Dan's retirement from the Air Force in 1984, he and Barbara settled in Sterling, VA where he worked for various companies including, Sperry, Honeywell, Raytheon, BAE Systems, Science Applications International Corporation, Systems Research Applications, and Rockwell Collins. While working at Raytheon he attended classes in the evening and graduated from Strayer University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems in 1996. He was a former member of Lodge 264 Ancient Free and Accepted Mason in Herndon, VA and the Society of Logistics Engineers. Surviving in addition to his mother is his wife of 47 years, Barbara L. (Harrison) Sherman; one son and daughter-in-law, Greggory Todd and Diana Jane Sherman of Leesburg, VA; one daughter Jennifer Sherman of Sterling, VA; two granddaughters, Emma Sherman and Kayleigh Sherman of Leesburg, VA and a brother, Lawrence Edward Sherman of Moorefield, WV. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM, Monday, June 2, 2014 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St., Moorefield, WV with Pastor Doyle Patch officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors accorded by US Air Force at the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, WV. The family will receive friends from 5:00 7:00 PM Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the funeral home.
