Dennis Owen Helmick

December 26, 1954 — December 26, 2025

Moorefield, WV

Dennis Owen Helmick, age 71 of South Fork, Moorefield, WV, was called home to his heavenly Father on Friday morning, December 26, 2025. Dennis was born on December 26, 1954, at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV, to the late David Andrew Helmick and Mary Eloise Moyers Helmick. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Michael. Dennis passed quietly on his birthday, to which he celebrated in the arms of our Savior.

Dennis was a devout Christian and served as a Pastor for Harper’s Chapel Church. He taught Sunday School for many years at Old Fields Baptist Church, where he made lasting impacts on the youth in attendance. His faith is the legacy he leaves behind, and no greater gift or lesson a person could receive.

Dennis graduated from Moorefield High School, Class of 1973, enlisted in the U.S. Army and integrated those lessons into his already disciplined life, summarized by one of his favorite quotes: “If you show up early, you’re on time. If you show up on time, you’re late and if you’re late, don’t bother showing up!”

Dennis worked for many years at Foodland and for his friends and family as a butcher, before being hired at American Woodmark in 1987. He would hold that job, mostly as “Team Leader”, until his early retirement in 2020 to assist in the care of his father, David “Pap”. No long after his retirement, he worked for “Bill” at Doug’s Sport Shop, where he loved shooting the breeze with others about guns, ammo and animals.

Those who knew Dennis recall his love for the outdoors. He especially loved bowhunting but was also fond of the outdoors in general. Owning several motorcycles through the years, he would look forward to riding through the mountains, especially with his friend, Lester Mongold. He was not one to sit around, as you could find him working around the house at any hour, or engaging himself with home projects. Sharp witted and humorous, he touched many lives and left a lasting impression on all those he knew or talked to.

Dennis leaves behind a legacy of humor, compassion, faith and strength through his sister, Peggy (Hunter) Williams; his daughter Jayme Lynn Helmcik and his sons, Austin Helmick and Cody Helmick.

A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 PM Friday, January 2, 2026, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor D. J. Taylor officiant followed by Military Rites accorded by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of services.
