Donald Warden Hott

Donald Warden Hott, age 98 of Reynolds Gap Road, Old Fields, WV passed away Monday morning, March 6, 2023, at his residence. Born on August 3, 1924, in Baker, WV, he was the oldest son of the late Donald Eugene Hott and Edna Florence Poland Hott. His wife of 69 years, Annie Elizabeth Carter Hott, preceded him in death in April 2015. Two sisters, Marguerite Harper & Nola Clark, a brother, Harlan Hott and a son-in-law, Russell Newman also preceded him in death.

Surviving is a daughter, Susan H. Newman of Old Fields, WV; two granddaughters, Sue Ellen (Ryan) Rutherford of Strasburg, VA and Becky (Griff) Yokum of Upper Tract, WV; two brothers, George (Betty) Hott of Moorefield, WV and Wendell (Betty) Hott of Yellow Springs, WV; a sister, Jean Halterman of Baker, WV; a sister-in-law, Joan Hott of Moorefield and numerous nieces and nephews.

Known to all by his middle name, Warden, he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football in high school before leaving prior to graduation to join the service. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 as a postmaster on the USS Barnes. Upon being discharged, he returned to Moorefield and earned his high school diploma and in 1946 he married Elizabeth Carter and started a family. Shortly thereafter, he bought a small grocery/country store in Old Fields and went into business for himself. In addition to running the grocery/country store, Warden served as the Postmaster in Old Fields for 36 years. He sold the store to Kevin Heare and retired from the Postal Service in 1978 and took up his passion of golf fulltime.

Warden was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church where he was an usher for more than 60 years. He was a 77+ year member of the American Legion, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Branch Mountain Hunting Club, a member of Valley View Golf Club and a past director of Olivet Cemetery.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastors Mark Flynn and Dan Sterns officiants.  Interment will follow with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the U.S. Navy and the Moorefield Veteran’s Honor Guard in the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Friday at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street.
