Eugene Conway Sherman, known to all as “Tude,” age 90, of Moorefield, WV, passed away Saturday evening, October 24, 2026, at the Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center in Petersburg, WV.
Born March 24, 1936, in Frosty Hollow, he was the son of the late Ocie Eugene Sherman and Nellie Grace Crites Sherman. His wife, Dorothy Lee Crites Sherman preceded him in death in November 2023. He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Rex Sherman; two sisters, Mary Ganoe and Josephine “Duckie” Conrad; and two brothers, Ray “Mutt” Sherman and Carl Sherman. He is survived by 3 sisters, Carol Crites, Sue Kyle and Libby Martin and 3 brothers, Wendell, Woodrow and Neil.
Tude was employed at the Tannery in Petersburg, West Virginia, where he worked for many years. He later became a truck driver for Rockingham Poultry, now known as Pilgrims Pride, in Moorefield, continuing his dedication to hard work and providing for himself and his family.
Outside of work, Tude enjoyed a variety of hobbies and activities that brought him happiness. He loved spending time outdoors, taking on carpentry projects, playing cards, and bowling. He found pleasure in the simple things in life.
One of Tude’s greatest loves was animals, especially goats, which held a special place in his heart. He also had a deep love for babies and children. Though he could sometimes appear rough around the edges, those who truly knew him understood that beneath his tough exterior was a heart of gold. He was a man who would never knowingly hurt anyone and who cared more deeply than he might have ever expressed in words.
Tude’s compassion and courage were evident in a remarkable moment when he helped save the lives of a family caught in a flash flood. For this heroic act, he was honored for his efforts. It was a testament to the goodness within him and a reminder that, behind his strong personality, was a man willing to step forward when others were in need. Those who knew him best will remember the man beneath the rough exterior—a man with a heart of gold whose life was filled with projects and stories.
He is survived by two daughters, JoAnn See and Margaret Murrell; two sons, Lloyd (Faye) Sherman and Timmy (Libby) Sherman; eight grandchildren, Tyler (Sarah), Brandon (Breanna), Tanner (Valeria), Tucker, Morgan, Aurora, Amelia, and Harley; seven great-grandchildren, Clattie, Diana, Brooklen, Maverick, Archer, Brantlee, and Cooper; and step-grandchildren, Debbie (Gaye) Wilson, Pam (Dane) Schell, and Brodell Wilson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street, with Pastor Elizabeth “Libby” Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Olivet Cemetery. The family will welcome visitors to pay their respects from 5–7 PM on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the funeral home.
