George Abner Hott, 97, of Moorefield, WV, went home to be with his Lord on July 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born January 30, 1928, he was the son of the late Donald Eugene and Edna (Poland) Hott and the devoted husband of the late Betty Carter Hott—the love of his life and wife of 74 years. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Harlan and Warden; sisters, Marguerite Harper, Nola Clark, and Jean Halterman; and his beloved bonus grandson, James Brady.
A proud Moorefield native, George was a hometown hero whose name became synonymous with excellence, humility, and heart. A three-sport standout at Moorefield High School, he earned All-State honors in football, basketball, and baseball. His legendary athleticism led to multiple Hall of Fame inductions, a retired football jersey, and Moorefield’s baseball field being named in his honor.
After a brief time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, George answered the call to serve in the Korean Conflict. He later returned to complete his education at Shepherd College, where he co-captained the school’s first undefeated football team and was twice named to the All-West Virginia Conference team. His contributions to the program earned him a place in the Shepherd College Hall of Fame.
Following graduation, George was invited to the Washington Redskins' spring tryout camp in California, where he made second-team running back. But in true George Hott fashion, he chose to return home—turning down a shot at the pros to pour his heart into teaching and coaching the next generation.
As an educator and coach for more than two decades, George mentored countless students—instilling discipline, confidence, and compassion. Under his leadership, Moorefield teams reached multiple state tournaments, and he was honored as Coach of the Year in both football and baseball. After retiring from education, he continued serving his community as Sheriff of Hardy County—following in his father’s footsteps—and was later recognized as the Spirit of Hardy County, a reflection of the deep love and respect his neighbors held for him.
George’s faith guided every aspect of his life. A lifelong member of Duffey Memorial Church, he served in numerous leadership roles. He was also a dedicated member of the VFW and American Legion Post 64, where he served as Post Commander and honored the service of others.
Above all, George was a devoted family man who cherished time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He lived a life rooted in kindness, humility, and service—and Moorefield is better for having known him.
He is survived by his children, Sherri (Joseph) Mohr, George (Karen) Hott, Richard (Vickie) Hott and Kelly (Bill) Biller; grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Mohr, Kasey (Joshuah) Hott, Molly (Michael) Majher, Carson (Jerrica) Hott, Logan (Jourdin), Dane (Kat) Biller, and Emily (James) Biller; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Emory, Noelle, Rosie, Stetson, Deklan, Ayla, Remmy, and Dawson; his brother, Wendell (Betty) Hott; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
In his final days, George found peace in knowing he would soon be reunited with his beloved "Honeypot" in their heavenly home, fully confident he would join her on "the swing". He leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, leadership, faith, and the countless lives he touched.
