Larry Blaine Heavner, age 64 of Moorefield, WV passed away Tuesday morning, July 1, 2003. Born February 2, 1939 in Moorefield, WV he was a son of the late Lee & Sarah (Ratliff) Heavner. Larry was a retired Veteran of the US Navy of the Vietnam era, having served his country for over 20 years including four years in the US Air Force. Some of his awards consisted of the Combat Action Ribbon, four Good Conduct Awards, Air Force Good Conduct Award, Republic of Vietnam Civic Action Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (with 5 stars) and the Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation. He was a life member of the John M. Golliday Post# 64 American Legion, where he served as a commander; a life member of the Denney-Moyers-Pratt Post #9606 Veteran?s of Foreign Wars, where he served as a commander; and a member of the 40 & 8 Chef De Gare. He was a State Vice Commander of the American Legion Department of WV; 10th District Commander of the American Legion Department of WV and was to take the office of Commander of the American Legion Department of WV later this month. He was a devoted and compassionate employee of Fraley Funeral Home of Moorefield. He was preceded in death by his first wife Helen (Turner) Heavner in November 1997, a brother; Lysle Heavner preceded him in death in September 2001. Surviving is his wife, Eva Wolfe; five step-sons, Allen Shoemaker of Wardensville, WV, Denny Shoemaker of Moorefield, WV, Mike Shoemaker of Petersburg, WV, Greg Vance of Fisher, WV and Jeff Vance of Moorefield, WV; two sisters, Zella Rumer of Belpre, OH and Genevieve Wilkens of Louisburg, NC; eight step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were conducted Sunday, July 6, 2003 at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren with Pastor Brad Taylor and Rev. Lynn Rohrbaugh officiating. Interment followed with full military graveside rites accorded by the US Navy at the Olivet Cemetery. The Moorefield Veteran?s Honor Guard served as an Honorary Honor Guard.
