Lawrence Edward Sherman, Jr.

November 9, 1963 — March 27, 2023

Lawrence Edward “Larry” Sherman, Jr., age 59 of Purgitsville, WV, formerly of Moorefield, WV, passed away Monday afternoon, March 27, 2023 at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born on November 9, 1963 in Harrisonburg, VA he was a son of Phyllis Jean Williams Sherman of Moorefield, WV and the late Lawrence Edward Sherman, Sr. He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church, located in Moorefield, WV.

Larry grew up in the area of Moorefield, WV. He graduated from Moorefield High School in 1982. During his time in high school, he played football, basketball, and ran track and field. He pursued secondary education and graduated from West Virginia University in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. During his undergraduate studies, he was elected to the Student Board of Governors. He continued his studies and elected to enroll in West Virginia University College of Law and graduated in 1989. Upon graduation, he worked for Bowles Rice Law Firm in Charleston, WV. After one year of working in Charleston, he made the decision to return to the general area where he grew up to provide legal services for his community, where he joined the law firm of Royce B. Saville, in Romney, WV. In 1993, he opened his own law firm, “Sherman Law Firm,” which was headquartered in Romney, WV. Over the course of the twenty-nine years of his law practice, he had “satellite offices” in Moorefield, Capon Bridge, and Petersburg. His Moorefield Office has been in the old historic Old Stone Tavern for over the past ten years. In 2007, Brian J. Vance joined Sherman Law Firm and practiced law with Larry for fifteen years. For over the past twenty-nine years, he has provided services in criminal defense; domestic relations; civil litigation; workers’ compensation; social security; disability; wills, trusts, and estates; bankruptcy; contracts, property; child protective services proceedings, and administrative law.

Over the past eighteen months, Larry had the opportunity and privilege to practice law with his first-born son, Grant M. Sherman, who joined the family law firm in the fall of 2021, upon graduating WV University College of Law in May 2021 and being admitted to the West Virginia State Bar in late October 2021. For those of you who knew Larry, it was his life-long dream to have one of his sons join his law practice, and having the opportunity to practice law with his first-born son was one of his greatest accomplishments.

Larry consistently demonstrated one of the greatest work ethics you would ever see, and if you drove by his law office in the evenings, you often would see the lights on through the wee hours of the night, all due to his passion and love of the practice of law. He also enjoyed all WVU athletics, but especially loved, with a burning passion, WVU Football. He occasionally hunted and golfed during his life and enjoyed these activities with his five boys as well. But, most importantly, for anyone who knew him, you would know that he loved and cherished most of all was spending quality time with his family and five sons.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Phyllis Sherman, are his five sons, Grant McClellan Sherman and Stuart Lee Sherman Purgitsville, WV, Hayes Reed Sherman and Lawrence E. Sherman, III of Moorefield, WV and Jaxon Reese Sherman of Petersburg, WV. He is also survived by numerous Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins.
