Sue Halterman

February 10, 1929 — January 28, 2024

Moorefield, WV

Mary "Sue" Halterman, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2024, at the age of 94 in Baker, WV. Born on February 10, 1929, in her beloved hometown of Moorefield, WV, Sue was the daughter of Lester Lynwood Kite and Eunice Jane Jenkins Kite. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Vance and a brother, Paul L. Kite.

Sue had a passion for education, and after graduating from Moorefield High School in 1947, she embarked on a successful career. She dedicated many years of service to Hester's Industries before joining the County Circuit and Clerks office. Exemplifying her commitment to public service, Sue made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of County and Circuit Clerk. Her tireless work and dedication to her role earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the community she served. Sue's impact was felt beyond the borders of her county as she actively participated in various boards and associations throughout the state.

In 1992, Sue retired from county government after 25 years of loyal service. However, retirement did not slow her down. Seeking new adventures, she joined FEMA, where she traveled across the United States and even to the Virgin Islands, providing aid during times of disaster. Sue cherished the opportunity to meet and help people in need, leaving a lasting impact wherever she went. After a full career at FEMA, Sue finally retired in 2010, proud of the lives she touched and the difference she made.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sue cultivated a vibrant social life. She enjoyed playing golf with friends at Valley View and continued to nurture friendships through her love for bridge. Sue's zest for life and her warm presence brightened the lives of those around her.

Devoted to her faith, Sue was a dedicated member of Moorefield Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. Her spiritual journey brought her comfort and peace, guiding her throughout her life.

Sue's legacy lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her daughter Brenda Halterman Riggleman of Harrisonburg, VA, her son Michael L. (Carla) Halterman of Winchester, VA, her brother Jack R. (Leda) Kite, her granddaughters Amy (Bryan) Duff and Tara (Matthew) Sobel, and her great-grandchildren Jordan (Mitchell) Wilson, Brady Duff, Bentley Duff, Camden Duff, and Maggie Sobel, Grant Sobel. Sue's cherished great-great-grandchildren Quinn and Sadie Sue will carry the essence of her love and kindness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, located at 107 Washington Street.  Pastors Mark Flynn and Jim Yao will officiate the service, honoring Sue's remarkable life and legacy. Following the service, Sue will be laid to rest in Olivet Cemetery.
