Roger Loring Sherman

Roger Loring Sherman, age 79, of Moorefield, WV, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 at his home on Forest Glen. Born May 10, 1935 in Petersburg, WV, he was the son of the late Loring Albertus Sherman and Mary Phyllis Poling Sherman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Leigh Kotz Sherman in November 2008. He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Sherman Golden of Berkeley Springs, WV, a son, Joseph Loring Sherman of Moorefield, WV, and five grandchildren Stephanie, Benjamin, Grant, Carter, and Aubrey. A graduate of Shepherd University and West Virginia University who majored in elementary education, he taught in Hardy County Schools for over 30 years and was honored as teacher of the year in 1987. He began his teaching career as teacher/principal at a one-room school in Peru, WV and finished his career at Moorefield Elementary School where he took pride in exposing local students to the arts. In his retirement, he remained active as a part-time employee at American Woodmark and Fraley Funeral Home. A long-time member and former Sunday School teacher of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church, Roger also found time to serve as a community volunteer as a charter member and president of the Moorefield Jaycees, a member of the Friends of the Library, and a board member to Boy Scout Troop 60. Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 PM Monday November 24, 2014 at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington St., with Pastor Jay Parkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
