Stanley Joseph “Joe” Mathias, Jr., age 69 of Old Fields, WV, passed away Tuesday morning, June 21, 2022, at J W Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV, surrounded by his family. Born on October 20, 1952, in Cumberland, MD, he was a son of the late Stanley Joseph Mathias and Louella Katherine Harman Mathias.
Joe graduated from Moorefield High School, Class of 1971 and then attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University and earned a degree in Animal Science. Joe had an appreciation for the lands as a cattle, poultry, and crop farmer in the beloved South Branch Valley. He was a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church; the WV Cattleman’s Association; the WV Poultry Association and the West Virginia Farm Bureau. He was a devoted member of the Tri-County Fair Beef Committee where he annually enjoyed seeing all the 4-H/FFA members. He had a strong passion for the 4-H/FFA youth programs that he and his children participated in as a youth and continued to pass that passion to his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Ann Boggs Mathias; a daughter, Amy (Bill) Martin and a son, Andrew (Melissa) Mathias both of Moorefield, WV. Joe leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Will & Wyatt Martin, and Harper & Blake Mathias along with two step-granddaughters, Claire Martin of Bridgewater, VA and Chloe Martin of Charlottesville, VA; a sister, Patricia (Robert) Grafton of Potomac, MD and nieces Carmen (Craig) Schwartz and Kathy (Brooks) Romedy. Also surviving is the mother of his children, Helen Mathias of Moorefield.
Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Flynn officiant. Interment will be at 2:00 PM Saturday at the Boggs Family Cemetery, Lower North Fork Road, Seneca, WV. The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 PM Friday at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street. Due to the current COVID-19 recommendations, wearing of masks and social distancing by individuals unvaccinated is recommended.
