Obituary

William Hayward Craig, age 83 of Moorefield, WV, passed away Sunday evening, July 19, 2026, at his residence with his family at his side. Born on February 10, 1943, in Weston, WV, he was the son of the late George Washington Craig and Mary Madeline (Amos) Craig. He was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Peyton Lee Shook. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings as he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He dedicated an impressive 47 years of his life to the timber lands, employed as a forester by the NewPage Corporation (formerly Westvaco). His career as a forester was more than just a job; it was a lifelong passion for the land and the great outdoors. When he wasn't working, William was happiest with a fishing rod in his hand or exploring the woods during hunting season.

A man of diverse interests, he loved relaxing at home as an avid TV watcher. Music held a special place in his heart, especially traveling to attend and listen to Southern Gospel Music. Above all, he was fiercely loyal to his favorite sports teams. He was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers and rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Cleveland Browns.

He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Christine (Campbell) Craig; two daughters, Tracy Craig and Rebecca (Jody) Shook; a granddaughter, Chloe Lee Shook; a grandson, Nicholas Keller Shook; and numerous nieces and nephews

William’s wish for cremation has been honored, and we invite friends, family, and all who knew him to join in a celebration of his life. A gathering will take place at The Family Table Restaurant, 1137 US HWY 19 North, Jane Lew, WV 26378, at 12:00 PM (noon) on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Let’s come together to share stories, laughter, and memories that reflect the incredible spirit of William Craig. His light will continue to shine brightly through each of us.
